Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is a professional organization dedicated to promoting exceptional care for hospitalized patients and advancing the state of the art in hospital medicine through education and research. In 2017 SHM named palliative care as a core competency for hospitalists, and has since published tools and provided training and quality improvement guidance for hospitalists to improve the quality of life for hospitalized patients living with serious illness.

CAPC and SHM collaborate to connect hospitalists to clinical training in core skills for supporting patients with serious illness, namely: communication about patient goals and priorities, pain and symptom management, and how to collaborate with palliative care specialists to best support patients and families.
