Palliative Care Program Inventory
This fall, CAPC will launch the Palliative Care Program Inventory, a national initiative to build the field’s understanding of where and how specialty palliative care programs are operating in both hospital and community settings, and where gaps in access remain.
The Program Inventory data set will close an information gap in the field. It will help create a more complete picture of palliative care services nationwide, support research and advocacy efforts, and advance understanding of how palliative care is delivered across care settings.
Participation in the Program Inventory is free and open to all specialty palliative care programs in the U.S. You do not need to be a CAPC member to enter your program data or to receive Inventory reports.
Why Participate in the Palliative Care Program Inventory?
By contributing your program’s information, you’ll help to:
- Develop a national inventory of specialty palliative care programs
- Advance the field’s understanding of palliative care delivery across settings
- Strengthen advocacy for equitable access to palliative care
- Create national comparison reports of program structure and other insights that benefit the field
Participation will also help CAPC generate resources and technical assistance to support program leaders, health care organizations, policymakers, and others working to improve access to palliative care. The more programs that participate, the stronger and more actionable the data will be.
What Information Does the Program Inventory Collect?
The Program Inventory collects information about care setting and program operations, including staffing, patient volumes, and care delivery model. We recommend reviewing the short list of Inventory questions and gathering any data you may need before starting your submission. The Inventory does not collect any clinical data or protected health information.
As part of the submission process, programs have the option to be included in CAPC’s public Palliative Care Provider Directory on GetPalliativeCare.org. The directory helps patients, families, clinicians, payers, and referral partners identify palliative care services in their communities.
FAQ
Who is eligible to participate?
Any specialty palliative care program operating in the United States is welcome to participate. You will, however, need to have a capc.org account to log into the system. If your organization is not a CAPC member, you can create a free account. One person from each palliative care program will need to own the Inventory listing and can make edits at any time.
What information are you collecting about palliative care programs?
The Inventory collects information on palliative care program operations, including program characteristics, staffing, patient encounters, and patient demographics. It does not collect any patient-level data or PHI. The Inventory is currently collecting information from the calendar year 2025. All program operations questions are listed in a worksheet that you can use to collect your data.
Who has access to our program data?
Only CAPC staff will have access to all program data entered into the Program Inventory. Data will be used, in the aggregate, to create national reports highlighting the current state of specialty palliative care in the U.S. State organizations, such as state palliative care organizations, may occasionally request access to the list of programs operating in their local area; however, detailed program information and personal contact information, such as email addresses, will not be shared. View CAPC’s Privacy Policy.
When you participate in the Program Inventory, you also have the option to list your program in CAPC’s Palliative Care Provider Directory on GetPalliativeCare.org.
