Living on the Edge: Responding to Requests for "Therapies of Last Resort"
December 17, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. ET
About the event
Chris, a 73-year-old retired aerospace engineer, presents to your palliative care clinic with moderately advanced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS; also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). Chris wants no invasive procedures and, furthermore, has done a lot of internet research and would like to discuss measures to "take control of how I die," including voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED), palliative sedation, and medical aid in dying. In this interactive session, we will demonstrate compassionate, patient-centered responses to such inquiries and address the clinician's potential moral distress raised in such cases.
