Broader range of eligible practices can apply, including applications for the Seriously Ill Population (SIP)

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) has revised its policy and will now allow any eligible providers to submit applications to participate in the Primary Care First alternative payment model during a second enrollment period to open Spring 2021. As a reminder, the Primary Care First model uses a flat per-beneficiary-per-month to pay participating practices, largely replacing Medicare fee-for-service billing, and includes an option for practices to focus on the seriously ill population. The second round of applications will still be limited to practices in 26 geographic regions, and palliative care practices in those regions may consider applying. You can find those regions and answers to common questions about palliative care participation here. You can learn more about the broader Primary Care First model here.
