Description
The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is seeking applicants for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Caregiving Science. Caregiving science is the interdisciplinary study of the psychological, physical, and social aspects of caregiving. Our multidisciplinary training program aims to prepare a cadre of highly-trained clinician scientists who will become independent investigators dedicated to addressing the needs of caregivers (i.e., parents, partners, children, siblings, chosen family, friends) of patients living with all chronic and life-limiting illnesses, disabilities, and mental health challenges. Fellows will be mentored by Dr. Allison Applebaum, Director of the Steven S. Elbaum Family Center for Caregiving, as well as by numerous other faculty researchers within the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and across the Mount Sinai Health System.
All fellows will conduct mentored research across a range of topics, including psychosocial intervention development, psycho-oncology, healthcare communication, health disparities, comparative effectiveness, palliative care, and more. Fellows will receive training in core methods and skills necessary for scientific investigation through participation in regular seminars, workshops, and readings. Fellows will also participate in didactic programs within the Elbaum Center and the Brookdale Department, including a Work-In-Progress series, Grand Rounds, and Caregiving Science Journal Club. Fellows are expected by the end of Year 1 to solidify a plan for a career development (i.e., K) award, to be submitted in Year 2.
Fellows will also receive clinical training in the support of caregivers, and will provide care within the Elbaum Center’s Caregiver Support Program, as well as in the context of clinical trials for caregivers. In Year 2, fellows will receive training in clinical supervision and be expected to supervise junior therapists within the Elbaum Center.
Qualifications:
Eligible candidates will have a PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree in the fields of psychology, social work, psychiatry, or nursing and a demonstrated commitment to a career that focuses on addressing the psychosocial needs of caregivers.
