Description

The Palliative Care Physician specializes in relieving the stress and symptoms that accompany a serious or life-threatening illness.  The general focus of palliative care is the improvement in the quality of life experienced by the patient and his or her family and caregivers.  Palliative Care may be provided at any age and during any stage in a serious illness.  Palliative care may be received at the same time as curative treatment.

Primary tasks, duties, and responsibilities:

Collaborates with the patient’s attending physician and primary specialists to develop and update the patient’s plan of care, ensure the provision of direct medical services and to ensure optimal complex symptom management.
Serves as a medical resource and educator to medical staff, patients, families and attending physicians regarding complex symptom control and patients’ goals of care.
Adheres to the Florida Department of Health requirements, as well as legal, regulatory and CHAP requirements.
Provides complex symptom control expertise and communicates with medical teams to initiate and evaluate treatments for symptom management.
Completes ongoing assessment, evaluation and recommendations for patient’s individualized plan of care.
Documents care provided in the patient’s clinical record and reviews clinical material to document disease process, prescribed medicines, assessment of the patient’s health at time of entry, and the drug regime.
Maintains current knowledge of the latest research and trends in complex symptom management and develops protocols utilizing the most effective options for interventions.
Communicates, educates and counsels patient/family in dealing with serious or life-threatening illnesses. Participates in the resolution of interpersonal conflict and issues of clinical and ethical concern as requested.
Serves as a liaison to community physicians and participates in ongoing community outreach and education.
Conducts hospice pre-election evaluation and counseling services as requested / appropriate and collaborates with colleagues and attending physician to certify patient meets admission criteria based upon available diagnostic and prognostic indicators.
Participates in on-call rotation as scheduled and needed.

Education/Experience:

M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited medical school and Board Certified in a related specialty.
Current Florida license to practice medicine issued pursuant to Florida Statute 458 or 459.
Minimum of two (2) years’ recent active practice with direct clinical medical care experience.
Certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine strongly recommended.
Hospital staff privileges at one or more hospitals commonly serving patients in the service area strongly recommended.
Current Federal DEA registration.
