-One year general nursing experience is preferred. New nursing graduates are encouraged to also apply and will be considered along with other life experiences and interest in working in hospice field.
-Active KY state RN license
-Negative TB skin test, pre-employment physician’s health clearance
Registered Nurse Specialized Skills
Possesses knowledge and understanding of End of Life philosophy of care/symptom management, Clinical Skills, Bedside Manner, Infection Control, Nursing Skills, Physiological Knowledge, Administering Medication, Medical Teamwork, Multi-tasking, Listening, Verbal Communication, Provides comfort care and bereavement at end of life.
Summary of Responsibilities
-Seeks and obtains sufficient information necessary to function effectively in the hospice setting.
-Provides professional nursing care by utilizing all elements of nursing process.
-Assesses and evaluates patient's status by:
-Writing and initiating plan of care
-Regularly re-evaluating patient/family/caregiver needs
-Revising the plan of care
-Initiates and sustains as needed the implementation of orders for medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician
-Observes the patient for changes in condition and reports these changes and the patient's/family's/caregiver's needs to the attending physician and appropriate supervisory personnel. Records pain/symptom management changes/outcomes as appropriate.
-Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families
-Addresses/resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies
-Works collaboratively with hospice interdisciplinary team members to teach patient/family/caregiver:
-Food and Fluids at end of life
-Non-Verbal Signs and symptoms of pain/discomfort
-Medication administration, effects/side effects
-Provides appropriate support at time of death and period of bereavement.
-Supervises ancillary personnel and delegates responsibilities when required.
-Participates actively in interdisciplinary team meetings.
-Demonstrates a time-conscious attitude and consistently strives to use time effectively by completing assignments in an efficient, well organized, and self-directed manner.
-Shares information, knowledge, concerns, and expertise through staff meetings, in-services, and assisting in the orientation and education of new employees.
-Establishes and maintains effective communication patterns using tact, sensitivity, sound judgment, and professional attitude when relating to patients, patients’ families, co-workers, supervisors, health professionals, and physicians.
