Joan Teno, MD, MS, a physician health services researcher specializing in palliative care, hospice, and quality measurement authored a piece in JAMA Forum. The piece highlights how the seriously ill population, accounting for nearly half the costs and many gaps in care, is often overlooked or underweighted in current accountability and transparency efforts in alternative payment models. She notes that while progress has been made on patient-reported measures, more measure development and testing is needed in accountable care models.
