Legislation would allocate $12 million for a new palliative care research program at NIH.

On July 27, 2023, the Senate Appropriations Committee advanced legislation that allocates $12 million for a new palliative care research program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This funding would be used to implement a trans-Institute, trans-disease strategy to focus, expand, and intensify national research programs in palliative care. The funding would also provide critical assistance for the development of a comprehensive multi-Institutes and Centers initiative aimed at a wide variety of palliative care research, training, dissemination, and implementation of projects to intensify the strategic coordination of palliative care research efforts. This legislation will need to be reconciled with the House Appropriations bill and signed by the President before it becomes law.
