A breakdown of CAPC’s third John A. Hartford Foundation Tipping Point Challenge.

Tipping Point Blog 2023

The third round of CAPC’s The John A. Hartford Foundation Tipping Point Challenge is underway. The Challenge is a national competition to catalyze the spread of skills, ideas, and solutions that will improve health care delivery for all people living with a serious illness.

“This round is particularly exciting because we have combined the goals from the previous two competitions to capture all of the work happening nationally at both the training and innovation levels."

Brynn Bowman, MPA
Chief Executive Officer, Center to Advance Palliative Care

Two Categories of Competition

Category 1: Clinical Training

The greatest number of CAPC course completions within the timeframe of the competition. And/or, the greatest number of course completions since becoming a member organization.

The Clinical Training category is open only to CAPC member organizations. The organization with the greatest number of CAPC course completions will be declared the winner. Course completions for the Clinical Training category must have taken place between November 1, 2022 and October 31, 2023.

The Challenge website has resources to help organizations encourage course usage among their staff, including success stories from the first Challenge. CAPC Training Assignments are another useful tool organizations can use to meet the Challenge.

Category 2: Innovation
Initiatives, already implemented with proven outcomes that are making breakthrough change in the care of serious illness.

The Innovation category is open to all health care organizations. You do not have to be a CAPC member. For this category, organizations must submit an innovative initiative that has already been implemented with proven outcomes. The submissions will be rigorously vetted by an external panel of expert judges. All health care organizations, settings, disciplines, and specialties across the U.S. are invited to participate. Submissions for the innovation category will take place throughout the month of October 2023. If you’d like to receive an email notification when the submission period opens, along with guidelines and tips for developing a successful submission, sign up here.

The Local Tipping Point Challenge for New York City

Due to generous additional funding from The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, New York City-based member organizations can compete in the Clinical Training category on both the local level and the national. This unique double opportunity pertains only to the Clinical Training Category. Organizations can also compete in the Innovation Category, but only on the national level. There is no New York City segment for the Innovation category. And, as for the national Challenge, you do not have to be a CAPC member organization to compete in the Innovation category.
