The authors of a NEJM Catalyst study describe the use of machine-learning algorithms within the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's electronic health record (EHR) system. The algorithms generate 90-day mortality risk classifications for inpatients, and automatically triggers clinician alerts for intermediate- and high-risk patients, so the care team can provide timely goals-of-care (GOC) conversations and palliative care consultations.
