On May 20, 2022, the Hospice & Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) released a statement opposing prosecution of nurses for errors in care, in response to the recent high-profile case of a Tennessee nurse. "HPNA believes that criminalizing errors reported by healthcare professionals will halt the progress that has been made in creating a culture where professionals can disclose mistakes voluntarily. Voluntary reporting of errors is crucial to ensuring safety for patients and providers."
