Study reviews early career training gaps in leadership skills, and suggests an integration of leadership training in HPM fellowships.

In a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Ayla R. Pelleg, MD, et al. found that geriatrics and palliative medicine physicians obtain leadership roles quickly after fellowship, even without formal leadership training. Study participants reported that they often felt unprepared, learned “on the job,” and sought out additional leadership training. The authors concluded that early leadership training is needed to prepare fellowship graduates for the pressing demands of accelerated leadership.
