Few individuals have fellowship training in hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) and a surgical specialty. There is limited data to explain why some surgeons pursue HPM fellowship training.

In a study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, authors seek to understand the motivations of surgeons who pursue HPM training and identify challenges to completing fellowship that may inform solutions to expand surgeon representation in palliative care.
