White paper synthesizes evaluation results from projects aimed at improving care for people living with serious illness.

In a recent white paper, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) synthesized evaluation results from four palliative care projects conducted between 2012-2021. CMMI reviewed results from the Medicare Care Choices Model, two Health Care Innovations Awards (Four Seasons and Sutter Health Corporation), and the Medicare Health Care Quality-Meridian demonstration. It found that palliative care projects improved beneficiaries’ and caregivers’ experience of care and quality of life, but model uptake was low and cost and service use impacts were mixed. CMMI will use this information to integrate a comprehensive approach to palliative care into current and future demonstrations.
