Study suggests that patients with intellectual disability may have reduced access to palliative care than the general population.

In a scoping review published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Josselyn Velepucha-Iniguez, MD; Patricia Bonilla Sierra, MD; and Eduardo Bruera, MD found that patients with intellectual disability may have reduced access to palliative care than the general population. Access to healthcare and palliative may not always be available to patients with intellectual disability, especially in rural areas due to lack of health centers. More research and education on the palliative care needs and care for patients with intellectual disabilities is needed.
