A recent Insight Into Diversity article discusses the need for better recruitment and training for the hospice and palliative care workforce, as there will be a growing aging population living with serious illness as we approach 2050.

Per Joe Rotella, MD, and Tara Friedman, MD, “Although the number of palliative care programs has grown dramatically over the past decade, the physician workforce needed to provide appropriate palliative care, mentor, and teach the next generation of physicians in the core precepts of palliative medicine, and develop the knowledge base required to provide the best quality care for patients and their families, is inadequate." This statement is especially true for underserved communities, where there have been longstanding disparities in care.
