20 Hospitals and Cancer Centers to Receive $10,000 Grants for Joint Commission Certification
Center to Advance Palliative Care to Provide Technical Assistance
Twenty hospitals and cancer centers wishing to achieve the new Joint Commission Advanced Certification for Palliative Care will receive grants from LIVESTRONG®. The application process begins today, January 23. The deadline to apply is February 15.
The new funding for the Advancing Certification for Palliative Care in Cancer Centers is part of the foundation’s 2012 Community Impact Project. The Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) will provide technical assistance to each site.
Palliative Care is specialized medical care focused on relief of the pain, symptoms and stress of serious illnesses such as cancer. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.
Every cancer patient, from the day of diagnosis, has palliative care needs. Palliative care integrated into cancer care has been shown to improve physical and psychological symptoms, improve family caregiver well-being and even prolong survival.
“The new funding opportunity will not only engage the public but will provide a chance for palliative care teams across the country to demonstrate the highest quality patient and family-centered care for members of their community living with cancer,” said Diane E. Meier, MD, Director, Center to Advance Palliative Care.
The new Joint Commission Certification is designed to set standards and acknowledge hospitals providing state-of-the-art palliative care services to hospitalized patients, and their families. It recognizes inpatient palliative care teams demonstrating exceptional patient and family-centered care.
Communities themselves will vote for the hospital or cancer center of their choice. Voting will take place March 7—23, 2012. Grantees will be notified April 9, 2012.
