How to Support Patient Autonomy in Decisions about Dialysis Discontinuation
Overview
This Interprofessional Grand Rounds session explores the complex clinical, ethical, and emotional considerations surrounding dialysis discontinuation. Using real-world patient scenarios, expert faculty will examine how ambivalence, clinician influence, and family dynamics shape decision-making, and how clinicians can support patient autonomy during these conversations.
Participants will learn practical communication strategies to facilitate values-based discussions and guide patients and families through informed decisions about dialysis withdrawal. The session will also review common symptoms following dialysis discontinuation and evidence-based approaches to symptom management, equipping clinicians to provide compassionate, high-quality care during this transition.
