A new article in the Journal of Palliative Medicine argues that equity must be a core priority in evidence generation—not just for moral reasons, but to ensure scientific accuracy and improve health care outcomes. The authors, Rebecca Rodin, MD, and R. Sean Morrison, MD, highlight how disparities in study design, such as underrepresentation of certain racial, ethnic, or gender groups, can lead to misguided clinical practices, overlooked treatments, delayed diagnoses for patients, and more. They conclude that sustained investment in health equity research is essential for delivering high-quality care to all patients.
