A retrospective study in the Journal of Palliative Medicine examines factors influencing tele-palliative care use among patients with heart failure, highlighting opportunities and persistent disparities in access to virtual palliative care.

A study published in the Journal of Palliative Medicine examined factors associated with tele-palliative care use among more than 31,000 hospitalized patients with heart failure. Researchers found that younger patients, those with higher comorbidity burden, and patients treated after the COVID-19 pandemic were significantly more likely to receive tele-palliative care consultations.

In contrast, patients living in more socioeconomically disadvantaged areas were less likely to access tele-palliative services, highlighting ongoing digital access barriers. Distance from tertiary care centers also influenced use, with patients farther away more likely to utilize telehealth. No differences were observed by race, gender, or insurance type. The findings suggest telemedicine may expand palliative care access but require targeted strategies to ensure equitable utilization.
