Journal of Pain and Symptom Management study explores how integrating AI into electronic health records can help clinicians identify goals-of-care conversations and support more person-centered care for patients living with serious illness.

In a study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, researchers examined the feasibility of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into electronic health records (EHRs) to identify and flag documented goals-of-care conversations in real time. Following a six-month pilot at four hospitals, the AI tool was expanded to 51 hospitals, identifying more than 37,000 patients with goals-of-care documentation in approximately two months. The findings suggest that AI may help clinicians more easily access important patient conversations, reduce documentation burden, and support care that aligns with patients' goals and preferences.
