Screening Rates Same for Virtual vs. In-Person Palliative Care, But Language and Race Disparities Exist
A study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management sought to assess disparities in screening for psychosocial, spiritual, and goals of care needs based on visit type (virtual or in-person). While no differences were uncovered, the researchers found significant disparities in screening rates based on a patient’s language and race, specifically in patients who identified as Black and those whose preferred language was not English, with lower odds of screening regardless of visit types. The authors of this study recommend addressing language and race disparities is important for providing equitable, high-quality palliative care.
