A study published in Oncology Nursing Forum demonstrates one solution for addressing the limited palliative care workforce in oncology: educating APRNs to incorporate palliative care into their oncology practices. At the start of the study, participants recorded a low percentage of their patients receiving palliative care as part of their treatment. After participating in specific coursework and ongoing support, more participants participated in family meetings, recommended palliative care consults, and more. The outcome of the study has implications for nursing, including that APRNs can influence change and improve care for their patients if given the proper training.
