In an effort to bridge a gap in the literature on communication with Asian patients living with serious illness, researchers explored U.S. physicians’ perceptions of their interactions. Published in Palliative Medicine Reports, the study identified three key themes: trust cannot be assumed, family roles must be understood and honored, and patient preferences for communication should be honored and can build trust. The authors conclude that culturally adaptive communication that's built on trust, family involvement, and patient-guided preferences, is essential to reducing disparities and achieving goal-concordant care.
