Perspectives of Former Caregivers of Black Older Adults Living with Dementia
A study published in the Journal of Gerontological Nursing highlights the voices of former caregivers of Black individuals living with dementia, focusing on their experiences with advance care planning (ACP). These caregivers, who have lower socioeconomic status, identified key challenges including lack of education, limited support during and after caregiving, cultural barriers, and the emotional toll of caregiving—especially the struggle to reclaim their identity after their caregiving role ended. Their insights, which fill a critical gap in the literature, offer valuable guidance for designing culturally responsive interventions that promote equity and sustained caregiver support.
