In an article published in the Journal of Hospice & Palliative Nursing, authors Kiernan Riley, PhD, BSN, RN, et al. did a systematic review to determine palliative care utilization in the severe and persistently mentally ill population, such as patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. With complex symptomatology and complicated medical disparities affecting this patient popluation, their quality of life is affected. The authors argue that palliative care should be offered to this patient population.
