Palliative Care Program Spotlight: Avoiding and Overcoming Staff Burnout

June 2, 2018 | By CAPC Staff

The Palliative Care Program Spotlight Podcast Series, produced by the Center to Advance Palliative Care, shines a light on the successes and challenges faced by palliative care programs across the United States. The programs featured in the series are of different sizes and settings. Each episode features an in-depth conversation with a program leader on a wide variety of topics such as overcoming obstacles; managing growth; avoiding staff burnout; getting institutional buy-in; working with referring physicians; and navigating uncertain waters ahead.

Palliative care specialists can often feel spread thin especially if the team is understaffed or overbooked with consults.

In a recent episode, Dr. Wendy L. Knowlton, a Hospice and Palliative Care Specialist with Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, discusses these issues head on. Wendy understands firsthand what it’s like to feel burnt out. In this engaging conversation, Wendy opens up about a time when she felt overwhelmed and exhausted from the difficulties of the job and how that moment changed the way she manages her team today.
