The $64 million NIH grant will be used to establish ASCENT, a nationwide consortium advancing palliative care research to improve quality of life for patients and families.

Today, Mount Sinai, together with four partner institutions, announced that it has been awarded a five-year, $64 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to establish the Advancing the Science of Palliative Care Research Across the Lifespan (ASCENT) consortium. This consortium, which is the largest-ever NIH initiative in palliative care research, aims to transform the field by providing resources, expertise, and coordination to support high-quality research for enhancing care for people living with serious illness, and the people who care for them.

The consortium will fund and train early-career faculty, while supporting innovative studies to improve quality of life for people living with serious illness and their caregivers. Involving more than twenty institutions and six NIH institutes, ASCENT will provide the resources and coordination needed to advance palliative care research.
