Feasibility of Using CAPC Training to Build Hospital-Wide Primary Palliative Care Skills
Published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, this feasibility study examined hospital-wide implementation of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) training curriculum to strengthen primary palliative care skills among generalist clinicians. Authored by CAPC’s Stephanie Leung, MBA, and collaborators from Trinity Health, the study assessed strategies to optimize clinician engagement and training completion across two hospital sites.
Among 158 eligible clinicians, completion rates were 100% at one site and 92% at the other, with high engagement supported through site champions, reminders, and leadership reinforcement. Post-course evaluations showed strong perceived gains in knowledge and relevance to clinical practice, with most participants reporting substantial improvements in understanding across communication, symptom management, and foundational palliative care topics. The findings suggest that structured, self-directed training combined with targeted engagement strategies can achieve high adherence at scale and may be feasible for broader implementation in large health system settings.
