An integrative review summarizes how AI is being used for prognostication, symptom monitoring, and decision support—while flagging implementation, equity, and workflow hurdles.

In a Journal of Palliative Medicine article, researchers report findings from an integrative review of 70 studies examining how artificial intelligence has been applied in hospice and palliative care. Across included studies, AI supported mortality prediction and prognostication, symptom monitoring and patient needs identification, communication facilitation, care planning, and resource allocation. However, the authors identify key barriers to implementation, including reliance on retrospective or single-center datasets, limited generalizability, ethical and equity concerns, and challenges integrating AI into clinical workflows, noting that successful use will require attention to clinician trust, workflow alignment, and ethical considerations.
