Evaluating the Impact of a Standardized Spanish Glossary on Interpreters in Palliative Care
In a study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, researchers examined whether a standardized Spanish-language glossary could improve interpreter confidence, efficiency, and comfort during complex palliative care conversations. The glossary included 12 commonly used terms, such as advance care planning, goals of care, and hospice care, translated and reviewed by experienced medical interpreters. Following a six-week implementation period, interpreters reported statistically significant improvements in confidence across all glossary terms, with more than 70% reporting greater efficiency and comfort during conversations. The findings highlight the linguistic, cultural, and emotional challenges interpreters face when facilitating discussions about serious illness and suggest that standardized terminology may be a simple, low-cost tool to strengthen communication. The authors emphasize the importance of collaboration between clinicians and interpreters to support culturally sensitive care and improve communication with Spanish-speaking patients and families.
