Study demonstrates benefits of emergency department (ED)-embedded palliative care, for the patient and the hospital.

In a study published in the Journal of Palliative Medicine, authors sought to demonstrate that embedding palliative care in the emergency department (ED) is clinically meaningful, operationally viable, and offers a significant return on investment for the hospital. Through the study, they found that ED palliative care consultations increased tenfold, becoming the hospital's primary source of consultations, among other benefits (e.g., clinical and ROI benefits benefits). The study shows that ED and palliative care partnerships present a great opportunity to improve care for patients living with serious illness.
