Through an analysis of referral patterns within their institution, researchers find that many patients with MGC do not receive palliative care referrals as recommended in clinical guidelines.

In a poster abstract published by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), researchers sought to characterize their institution's patterns of referral to palliative care for patients living with metastatic gynecologic cancer (MGC). Through a chart review, the researchers found that although multiple professional organizations recommend early initiation of palliative care for patients with advanced cancer, patients living with MGC have not received a referral or experience significant delays between the point of diagnosis and consultation with palliative care. They also found that in most cases, referrals were only made for patients who were hospitalized, among other results.
