In a new opinion piece published in JAMA, Jessica L. Colburn, MD, shares the experience of receiving serious news about her daughter's cancer diagnosis, and the compassion behind it. The article, titled "The In-between", explores the feelings that she and her husband (both physicians) had before, during, and after the diagnostic test, and delves into the appreciation they had for the physician, who delivered the news in a respectful way.

"I had tried to prepare myself to hear this news as straight facts, but [the neuroradiology fellow] knew better. As our world fell apart, his compassion and warm, gentle presence grounded us and offered us hope."
