Study shows that algorithm-based default palliative care referrals for patients with advanced cancer were accepted by physicians.

At the 2024 ASCO Annual Meeting, Ravi Parikh, MD, presented the results of the BE-a-PAL study, which examined algorithm-based default palliative care referrals for patients with advanced lung or noncolorectal gastrointestinal cancer. The study found that physicians allowed referrals in 89% of intervention cases, which included weekly electronic health record prompts for oncologists to refer to palliative care for high-risk patients.
