New ASCO guidelines show how better communication can improve outcomes for patients, caregivers, and clinicians throughout cancer care.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) released updated guidelines to help oncology clinicians improve patient, caregiver, and clinician well-being through effective communication. Developed by a multidisciplinary panel, the recommendations draw on a systematic review of 73 studies, including 19 randomized controlled trials, covering interactions across the cancer care continuum. Guidance addresses core communication skills, goal-of-care discussions, treatment decision-making, end-of-life care, support network involvement, and clinician training. New updates include telehealth, interprofessional communication, and boundary setting. Implementation requires adequate time, training, and institutional support. ASCO emphasizes that guidance is not a standard of care and should be combined with professional judgment.
