A pilot project found that an APRN-led care plan improved quality-of-life assessments, disease understanding, and access to palliative care for patients completing phase I clinical trials.

In an article published in the Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology, researchers tested an APRN-led “Transitions” care plan for patients with gastrointestinal tumors completing phase I clinical trials. The pilot project—grounded in palliative care principles—addressed symptom, psychosocial, and spiritual needs, while supporting advance care planning and referrals to supportive services, such as palliative care. Results showed the model helped assess quality of life needs, enabled patients to better understand their disease status, and provided access to palliative care.
