A Sentiment-Based Comparison of AI- and Physician-Generated Empathic Statements in Palliative Care
In an article published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, researchers conducted a secondary analysis of the PALL-AI trial comparing cancer patients' preferences for AI- versus palliative care physician-generated empathic statements addressing fear and anxiety around cancer treatment, finding that the 72.4% of patients preferred the AI-generated statements when standardized for prompt and statement length. AI statements displayed uniformly positive sentiment while physician statements displayed negative sentiment, with "trust" and "joy" showing the strongest correlations with patient preference. The authors suggest that using AI with human guidance may enhance empathic communication in clinical care.
