Palliative Care Service Academic Appointment
Iowa City, IAThe University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is seeking a dynamic vBC/BE Hospice and Palliative Medicine physician to staff a growing and well-supported academic program. Responsibilities will include staffing inpatient and outpatient consultative services, working an exceptional interdisciplinary team, and teaching throughout the institution. We are interested in applicants at the rank of Associate, Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor. Candidates may have completed training in any of the approved AHPM specialties and must have an M.D. or D.O. degree. Candidates should possess outstanding abilities in teaching and clinical medicine. Salary is based on the academic level of entry and on the applicant’s qualifications and responsibilities.
The Palliative Care Program consists of a Consult Service and an Inpatient Unit, with an active teaching focus for rotating residents, and hospital staff. Established in 1999, it now has had a full team, including nurses, social worker, chaplain, music therapist and physicians. The consultative service enjoys excellent clinical relationships with oncology and intensive care services. Over the next year, the service will establish an outpatient clinic, and grow its presence in the Emergency Department and in other clinical services. Additional opportunities for program development and advancement exist at an affiliated VA Hospital which is in the process of building a palliative care service.

Palliative Care Physician Director
Nationwide Children’s HospitalNationwide Children’s Hospital is developing a Pediatric Palliative Care program. This program will coordinate and augment the current palliative care initiatives at Nationwide Children’s including the hospital’s longstanding Home-based Hospice Program and a recently developed care coordination program for children with complex, life- limiting conditions. The Physician Director’s primarily role will be developing and implementing a consult service. With the support of a team including an Advance Practice Nurse and a Social Worker the consult service will work to help manage symptoms, psychological, social and spiritual needs of children (and their families) with life-threatening conditions seen in Nationwide Children’s inpatient and outpatient settings. The Palliative Care Physician Director will also serve as the Medical Director for the Home-based Hospice and Palliative Care Program. Since 1995, Nationwide Children’s has been the only pediatric hospice program in central Ohio. In 2007, the hospital expanded this palliative care program to help families with children living with life-limiting illnesses who do not meet hospice criteria. The Medical Director will provide oversight and guidance to the team and consultation to the patients’ managing physicians who will continue to manage their patients’ care through their hospice experience. The Palliative Care Physician Director will develop education programs for medical staff and other staff to increase awareness of palliative care, comfort measures and to improve family centered care at Nationwide Children’s. The Palliative Care Physician Director will work in the Section of Comprehensive Pain Services with Dr. Michael Joseph and administrators to develop a comprehensive program of “wrap around” services for children, focusing on relieving acute and chronic pain, managing symptoms and enhancing the quality of life for children and their family.

Hospice of the Bluegrass (HOB) is a nationally respected hospice that provides hospice services to 23 counties in central, northern and eastern Kentucky to approximately 840 patients daily. The Palliative Care Center of the Bluegrass (PCCB) located in Lexington, has been recognized as a program of excellence by the Center to Advance Palliative Care in being named one of six national “Palliative Care Leadership Centers”. In Lexington, the PCCB provides multidisciplinary palliative medicine consultations to patients in 4 hospitals, care to ambulatory hospice and palliative care patients in an out-patient clinic, and palliative care consultations to patients in a number nursing homes in the central Kentucky region.
The physician joining our program will provide palliative medicine consultation and care, in the context of a multi-disciplinary team, to patients in the hospice in-patient unit, in the acute care/hospital setting, and in the out-patient clinic. Requirements: Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in the State of Virginia. Masters degree in Nursing, including advance practice preparation, is required. Minimum entry level: at least one year of experience as a nurse practitioner; at least five years varied experience in nursing/healthcare. This position requires certification in Hospice and Palliative Nursing (CHPN, advanced) to be obtained within 15 months of hire.
Broad clinical knowledge, excellent patient assessment skills and problem-solving ability are foundational. Knowledge of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches to managing symptom distress in seriously ill and dying patients is required. The Palliative Care NP must possess excellent interpersonal and communications skills, especially with families experiencing conflict or distress, and other health care professionals. The Palliative Care NP needs to be able to effectively teach patients, families and staff members at all levels of training and in diverse settings (bedside, classroom, professional meetings). He/she should be a confident mentor and coach for colleagues/staff. In addition to being self-directed and a self-starter, he/she needs to be equally comfortable in seeking guidance and assistance when needed.
Prior experience in program development, leadership, team building, education, and/or quality improvement is desirable. Formal end of life education such as ELNEC or EPEC is preferred. He/she needs to be able to use standardized formulae to calculate length of stay and cost-savings data. Computer literacy in Windows-based systems/software is needed.
