I’ve been struggling to think about where to find hope and what to do with the sense of helplessness that hearing about violent and hateful events bring, such as in Uvalde, TX, Laguna Woods, CA, Buffalo, NY, and so many others. Where I find solace is in the foundational ethos of our field. We are part of a palliative care community that performs what I think of as ‘miracles of humanity’ day in and day out – helping patients find quality of life, helping families create personal connection inside of the medical machine. The driving belief is that every person deserves dignity, deserves to be seen and heard and has a place in the human community.

These beliefs and values are antithetical to violence and racism. We at CAPC will continue to work every day to uphold them as both a moral and public health imperative.
