Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) Releases State-Level Reports on Access to Palliative Care
State reports released today by the Center to Advance Palliative Care—a complement to the 2019 State-by-State Report Card—provides information about palliative care access in each state, along with recommendations and resources to improve it. The availability of palliative care services in U.S. hospitals varies widely by both state and region. As more state-level champions and health officials explore opportunities to expand palliative care access in hospitals, data on the current palliative care landscape will help prioritize efforts.
For people living with serious illness, palliative care has been shown to improve quality of life and reduce avoidable emergency department visits, hospital and ICU stays. A significant portion of people living with serious illness, however, aren’t getting the care they need due to lack of understanding of when to refer to palliative care, but also to lack of access.
The reports allow for a way for state leaders and policymakers to see where and how palliative care exists, and how their state compares to their region and the rest of the country. There is continued pressure on both states and health care organizations to ensure the value of health care, and palliative care is well-known for delivering value.
