Understanding Key Principles (and Math) that Link Team Effectiveness and Staffing Plans

Staffing and work expectations depend on factors such as patient mix (complexity), reason for referral, team composition and organizational context. The answers are not static: as penetration increases the reason for consult and mix of patients change, which impacts workload per patient seen; as team size and mix increases stress can increase or decrease depending on clarity of work processes and team norms; and service expansion to multiple settings can have positive and negative effects. This webinar will use simple math examples to connect the dots between some of the comparative metrics from the National Palliative Care Registry TM and budget planning for staffing and costs. It will illustrate how an increase in staffing and the interdisciplinary team mix can impact measures such as “consults per fte” and “cost per patient”. And it will introduce principles that can help programs prioritize growth goals for more effective planning and more effective communication about resource needs.
