About the Presentation
"I can manage the medications easily, but the psychosocial issues are overwhelming!" How often has your palliative care team struggled with family dynamics and inadequate patient coping that become a barrier to the treatment plan? A trained palliative care social worker can strengthen your team and improve outcomes.
Palliative care programs, both new and established, must recognize the critical role the social worker plays within the interdisciplinary team and in promoting positive healthcare outcomes. Social work leaders in palliative care are making significant impact in program development; enhancing patient and family satisfaction; advocacy and promoting expertise in symptom management; as well as end of life care. Many programs are underutilizing social workers or are unable to establish funding for this important role.
This session will demonstrate how two established palliative care programs operate effectively with a full-time designated social worker on their team. New and established hospital palliative care programs that wish to understand the impact of a social worker on a palliative care team, as well as the financial logistics of supporting the position, will benefit from this presentation.
