Our analyses of access to palliative care in the United States have customarily been presented at the regional and state levels. Examining variation in access has been helpful to both the public and policymakers in increasing the availability of these services for all Americans. Findings in 2011 demonstrate considerable improvement since the 2008 Report Card. However, the 2011 analyses show that although prevalence has improved regionally, significant variation still persists from state to state.

As an addendum to the 2011 State Report Card, we present the prevalence of palliative care by US Congressional District. The objective of this addendum is to better assist states in targeting their strategies in improving access to palliative care.

The Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) provides health care professionals with the tools, training and technical assistance necessary to start and sustain successful palliative care programs in hospitals and other health care settings. Located at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, CAPC is a national organization dedicated to increasing the availability of quality palliative care services for people facing serious, complex illness.
