More about University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)

The UAB Palliative and Comfort Care Unit and Outpatient Clinics function under the auspices of the UAB Health System. The UAB Health System includes UAB hospital, the largest comprehensive medical facility in Alabama. Encompassing five city blocks, 13 major buildings and 2.1 million square feet of space, it operates more than 900 beds and serves approximately 45,000 patients each year. The Safe Harbor Unit provides services in the Birmingham VA Medical Center, a 144-bed acute tertiary care facility providing acute tertiary medical and surgical care to veterans of Alabama and surrounding states. In addition to providing tertiary care, it provides extensive primary care throughout Alabama in 6 Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).

Services of the UAB Center for Palliative Care’s Palliative and Supportive Care Clinics and Cachexia Clinic are delivered at the Spain-McDonald Clinic, a freestanding clinical facility located approximately one mile from the main UAB hospital campus. The HIV Outpatient Palliative Care Clinic is hosted by the HIV Clinic at the Community Health Building located ½ mile from the main hospital campus and integrated into the “1917 Clinic” for HIV care. Home-based programs include the VA HBPalC program and coordinated services through hospices and hospice home visits made through the UAB or VA programs.
