1. APPLY TO VISIT A PALLIATIVE CARE LEADERSHIP CENTER

The Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) is pleased to announce the Palliative Care Leadership Centers (PCLCs), an initiative funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to provide hands-on training and tools to fast-track the growing number of palliative care programs being started nationwide. Apply now at http://www.capc.org/PCLC/ to visit one of six premier palliative care programs and receive technical assistance in financing, designing and operating a successful program at your own institution. There is no better way to learn about starting or strengthening a palliative care program than to visit a leading program in practice. Log on to http://www.capc.org/PCLC/for information about each of the six PCLCs. Site visits will begin in February, 2004.

2. IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE PALLIATIVE CARE LEADERSHIP CENTERS

"Implementing Cancer Pain Education for Medical Students" Study Released
The study, published in the September/October 2003 issue of Cancer Practice, was a collaboration between Hospice of the Bluegrass and the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. In recognition of the study results, the Hospice of the Bluegrass has received an award from the American Cancer Society for an outstanding contribution to care of cancer patients.

Mt. Carmel Health System Team Member Wins Heart of Ohio Award
Mary Ann Gill, Director of Palliative Care Services at the Mt. Carmel Palliative Care Leadership Center has won the Heart of Ohio Award from the Ohio Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. The award is the ultimate recognition for hospice professionals by hospice professionals. It recognizes individual Ohio Hospice and Palliative Care Organization members who have made significant and repeated achievements in hospice and palliative care, particularly on a state level.

Massey Cancer Center Releases Study of Palliative Care Cost Savings
“A High-Volume Specialist Palliative Care Unit and Team May Reduce In-Hospital End-of-Life Care Costs” was published in the most recent issue of the Journal of Palliative Medicine. The research was the first of its kind to compare the cost of a hospital’s palliative care unit with the cost of caring for seriously and terminally ill patients in a regular hospital setting. Members of the Massey Palliative Care Leadership Center team, Thomas J. Smith, M.D.; Patrick Coyne, R.N., M.S.N.; Brian Cassel, Ph.D.; Lynne Penberthy, M.D.; Alison Hopson, R.N., M.S.N.; and Mary Ann Hager, R.N., M.S.N, authored the study.

Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice The Harvard Medical School Center for Palliative Care, co-directed by J. Andrew Billings, MD and Susan D. Block, MD, is offering the Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice on April 27-May 4 and November 10-16, 2004 in Boston, MA.

The course offers learning experiences for physician- and nurse-educators who wish to become experts in the clinical practice and teaching of palliative care.

The CAPC web site provides resources for palliative care employers and job seekers. The postings assist healthcare professionals fill and locate positions within the palliative care field.
