Managing Death in the ICU: Integrating Palliative Care and Critical Care

Director, Harborview End of Life Research Program

Learn about operationalizing palliative care in the ICU from one of the country's leading experts. Dr. Curtis will discuss state of the art methods for integrating palliative care in the ICU setting. He will also discuss system level interventions used to improve palliative care in the ICU; examine the principles and practices of withdrawing life support in the ICU setting; and discuss how to communicate with critically ill patients and their families.

Co-editor of the book, Managing Death in the Intensive Care Unit, (Oxford University Press 2001), Dr. Curtis has dedicated his career to improving quality care for persons with chronic diseases and critical illness. We are very pleased he can join us as our next grand rounds speaker.

2. EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION BEGINS FOR CAPC FALL MANAGEMENT TRAINING SEMINAR . . .

Planning, Funding and Sustaining a Hospital-Based Palliative Care Program: Tools and Strategies for Success

October 23-25, 2003

This three-day fall seminar is an enhanced version of CAPC's previous Management Training Seminars on Planning a Hospital-Based Palliative Care Program. Seminar highlights include: Creating Compelling Business and Financial Plans; Funding Palliative Care Programs; Effective Marketing; Needs Assessment/Organizational Models; Quality Measures; Hospital-Hospice Partnerships; and Obtaining Philanthropic Support.

Healthcare managers including physicians, nurses, administrators and others responsible for the planning and implementation of hospital and health system-based programs are encouraged to attend. This program is approved for CME Credit.

Program Partners include: California Coalition for Compassionate Care; California Healthcare Association; California Hospice Association; California Hospice and Palliative Care Association.

NOTE: Early Bird rate of $610 (individual) and $560 (discount)* available for registrants now through August 15th.

3. PALLIATIVE CARE LEADERSHIP CENTERS TO BE ANNOUNCED EARLY AUGUST . . .

In early August, CAPC will award a total of $4.5 million to six leading palliative care programs for the establishment of Palliative Care Leadership Centers (PCLC). This CAPC/RWJF initiative will link exemplary hospital-based palliative care programs with health care institutions seeking to develop similar state-of-the-art capabilities.


4. SEEKING SAMPLES: JOB DESCRIPTIONS . . .

Would you be willing to share your team's job descriptions? CAPC plans to post job descriptions on its website (www.capc.org) for key palliative care team positions, in order to assist programs that are attempting to develop their own. Our goal is to provide several models for the following positions:

· Medical Director
· Palliative Care Physician
· Clinical Director
· Nurse Practitioner
· Social Worker
