In this unique series, IPAL-ICU's team of experts addresses key issues for efforts to improve palliative care in critical care settings. Each monograph and presentation in the series is original and peer-reviewed, reflecting input, insights and guidance from our entire interdisciplinary team. • Integrating Palliative Care in the Surgical and Trauma Intensive Care Unit Although successful models for palliative care delivery and quality improvement in the intensive care unit have been described, their applicability in surgical intensive care unit settings has not been fully addressed. We undertook to define specific challenges, strategies, and solutions for integration of palliative care in the surgical intensive care unit.
• Physician Reimbursement for Critical Care Services Integrating Palliative Care for Patients Who Are Critically Ill Through the use of appropriate documentation, physicians can use critical care billing codes to optimize reimbursement for fulfilling the mandate to integrate palliative care as part of comprehensive critical care for all patients who are critically ill and critically injured.
