| Re:volunteer use in home based palliative care (by StacyRemke on 01/26/2012)
Hi. We do use volunteers in our home based (hospice and) palliative care program for children. We do however, also have a hospice license, and so this may be a function of that license. You may want to check with your state licensing department to ensure this falls within your service guidelines, or at least there are no prohibitions. It may also become a function of what state or local entity can engae the violunteers. For example, perhaps your city VNA gets volunteers for drivers or other services from some office in their organization? You might need to get creative. There is a great benefit to have someone / some office well versed in the recruitment, care and feeding, and supervision of volunteers on board to help manage it all. Good policies and guidelines are essential. Our hospital volunteer coordinator is invaluable in terms of these tasks. She is tireless and a great support to our program as well as the volunteers themselves. The volunteers have been a great addition to our program, by the way. Hope that helps.
